What are savings certificates?

A savings certificate is a bank deposit kept for a fixed term. The return depends on the rate, the term, and how often the bank pays it.

How is the certificate return calculated?

The annual return is the amount multiplied by the annual rate. The monthly return is that figure divided by 12, the quarterly return divided by 4, and the semi-annual return divided by 2.

What is the difference between a fixed and a variable return?

A fixed return stays the same for the whole term. A variable return uses the current rate, and previous rates remain in the history when the rate changes.

How do you calculate the monthly return?

Divide the annual return by 12. On a stepped certificate the monthly figure is the total return divided by the number of months.

What is the difference between a fixed certificate and a stepped one?

A fixed certificate uses one rate. A decreasing or increasing certificate uses a different rate for each period, and each period is calculated on its own before the totals are added.

Can bank certificates be compared?

Yes. Choose up to three certificates. The comparison uses the same amount you entered.
